PUBLISHER’S NOTE PBusinessBrief October/November 2020 2www.b b rief.co.za EDITOR’S NOTE BusinessBrief EW ith the reduction of the lockdown regulations to level 1, the pandemic continues to reshape our business landscape. We have a diverse range of relevant articles in this edition that will help you navigate through these tough times. Dialling back in time, on September 29, 1982, two people in Chicago, USA, died of cyanide poisoning - within the week another five people died. Investigators established that they all had taken Tylenol, the leading American pain-killing capsule at the time, owned by Johnson & Johnson. The capsules had been tampered with by an extortionist. On October 6, barely eight days since the first reported case, under the decisive leadership of Johnson & Johnson CEO, James E Burke, the removal of Tylenol off the shelves was ordered - 31 million bottles at a cost of $100million! From the beginning, Johnson & Johnson was credited for their openness and honesty. Within a year, the product had re- established itself as a trusted brand and had regained and grown its market share. The incident has been used by several business schools, including Harvard and Wharton, as a case study on how to deal with a crisis of reputation. By understanding their problem, their product and their customers, Johnson & Johnson had wasted no time in communicating openly, honestly, and quickly. In the light of the recent incidents that impacted two companies in South Africa, being KFC and Clicks, our cover story, Reputation crisis! | How to turn your misfortune into opportunity by Willem S Eksteen, Chief Executive, Stone, provides a powerful and pragmatic approach to dealing with unexpected events that threaten not only the reputation of an organisation but also the future continuity. If you need a break and can spend a few days away to recharge, then Tintswalo Lapalala is an ideal destination which will allow you to unplug and reconnect with nature.
