Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultra-intelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultra-intelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make.” I.J. Good wrote the above in 1965 in an essay warning about the possibility of a self-generating, self-improving artificial intelligence (AI). In doing so he was probably the first futurist to articulate the concept known as the ‘technological singularity’ - a hypothetical future point when technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization. The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) along with AI continue to dominate discourse about how society is physically changing. In order to adapt to our changing world we need to change the way we think. Our cover story, ‘Rewiring your brain | are you connected into 4IR thinking?’ by Mark Wilson, Managing Director of SYSPRO Africa, provides perspective of how we, as humans, need to shift our paradigm. In the same vein, Mic Mann, Co-CEO SingularityU South Africa in his article ‘Skills professionals need for the future’ looks at how developing an agility mindset, adopting a creative approach and leveraging the power of networks will futureproof careers as our future is disrupted. Continuing this edition’s AI theme, Kele Boakgomo, Managing Director and Innovation Services Lead for Accenture in Africa, explores the changes and benefits that AI is bringing to customer experience in the banking sector in her article, ‘Transforming banking CX with AI’. Similarly, asks Jay Thomson, C0-Founder & Chief Digital Officer of Hoorah Digital Consultancy in his article, ‘FMCG & CPG brands – time to use AI & machine learning?’. On a slightly different tack, Nalo Gungubele, Associate at Adams & Adams, in her article ‘Navigating the sharing economy’, looks at the challengers that regulators and legislators face as the grapple with the changing landscape that the shared economy has brought. The new iPhone 11 Pro, Acer Swift 3 Laptop, Skullcandy Sesh Truly Wireless Earbuds and Synology Diskstation DS218+ are the range of the latest tech gadgets and must- haves reviewed by our tech editor, Steven Ambrose. The setting lends itself to corporate workshops, senior management meetings and team-building getaways. Facilities include a conference room for 14 delegates, and breakaway areas for strategical planning, brainstorming and training sessions. Seven luxury tents with private plunge pools offer views across the wilderness. Enjoying a sheltered location, the Lapalala Wilderness offers sanctuary to herds of buffalo, black and white rhino, sable and roan antelope that are all bred on the reserve. Twenty-seven kilometres of pristine river meander through the reserve, providing opportunities to enjoy the peaceful magnificence of water-rich scenery, teeming with bird life. Conference programmes may be customised to include water- based wilderness activities such as riverside picnics, sunset cruises and fishing, or swimming in rapids and crystal-clear rock pools. Daily game drives and guided bush walks are on offer, along with excursions to ancient iron age and rock art sites within the reserve, as well as visits to the Wildlife Breeding programmes and the community-based Wilderness School. Bordered by other private game sanctuaries, the sheer expanse of this unspoiled biosphere area results in no light pollution and dramatic stargazing on cloudless nights. The Tintswalo at Lapalala kitchen serves mouth-watering cuisine in al fresco dining settings beneath the Milky Way, or traditional fireside dinners around a blazing boma firepit. The lodge decks and poolside verandas are sublime locations for delicious sun-baked lunches and indulgent African sundowners. The Tintswalo Lapalala lodge is a tented, eco-friendly camp which is completely off the grid, and solely run by solo power and generators. Conference delegates will enjoy all the modern comforts of a luxury lodge whilst still experiencing the true beauty of the bush. As there are only two commercial lodges on the reserve, vehicle density is very low, making it one of the most private and undisturbed safari conference experiences within the region. n Tintswalo Lapalala Tintswalo Lapalala, the latest addition to the Tintswalo portfolio, has introduced an Executive Retreat package that offers conferencing for up to 14 delegates in the privacy and tranquillity of the bush, only 300km (or a 30-minute charter flight) from Johannesburg.
